Spain’s cultural and creative industries are solidifying their strategic role in the national economy, driven by digitalization, the expansion of streaming, and the booming video game sector.
According to the latest data from Spain’s Ministry of Culture (Summary of Culture Statistics Indicators 2024), culture contributed 2.3% to Spain’s GDP in 2022—a figure that rises to 3.5% when including intellectual property-related activities. The sector now employs approximately 755,000 people (about 3.5% of total employment), with a significantly higher proportion of highly educated workers compared to the national average.
Spain’s audiovisual industry is experiencing rapid expansion, boosted by international productions, digital platforms, and public policies attracting film shoots. Between 2020 and 2023, employment in film, video, and television production grew by over 93%, per official data from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service.
Meanwhile, the video game industry continues to thrive as one of the most dynamic segments of the entertainment industry. In 2023, the sector generated €2.339 billion in revenue, with annual growth exceeding 16%, and the number of active development studios in Spain increased from 432 to 524.
The music industry also maintains positive momentum, supported by digital models: Spain’s recorded music market surpassed €568 million in 2024, with streaming accounting for over 89% of total revenue. Spanish artists earned €137 million in streaming royalties.
These figures highlight not only the sector’s economic impact but also its growing relevance in internationalization, technological innovation, specialized employment, and Spain’s position as a European creative hub.
In response to these trends, TBS Education-Barcelona is expanding its academic offerings with the launch of the MSc Cultural Management: Music, Screen & Video Games, an international program set to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year at its Barcelona campus.
The program aims to train hybrid professionals who can integrate artistic vision, technological expertise, and strategic management skills to address the rising demand for specialists in creative financing.
TBS Education holds the prestigious “Triple Crown” accreditation (AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS), a distinction held by fewer than 1% of business schools worldwide, ensuring the program meets global academic standards.
Barcelona was chosen as the program’s home due to its status as a leading European hub for audiovisual production, cultural festivals, music, and tech entrepreneurship. The city’s vibrant ecosystem connects students with production companies, creative studios, tech startups, and international cultural stakeholders, fostering real-world learning and tackling the sustainability and innovation challenges facing the cultural economy.
