Barcelona has proven itself a leader in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), achieving second place in the SDG Index of Spanish cities compiled by the consultancy IdenCity. This index evaluates the contributions of 55 cities, including the 50 provincial capitals, the two autonomous cities, and cities like Alcobendas, Sant Boi de Llobregat, and Rafelbunyol.

Leadership in sustainability and partnership building

Standing out in the achievement of the SDGs, Barcelona ranks first in two crucial goals: SDG 11 (making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable) and SDG 17 (strengthening partnerships to achieve the goals). This reflects Barcelona’s commitment to creating a sustainable urban environment and fostering global collaboration to achieve the SDGs.

Additionally, Barcelona ranks second in poverty eradication (SDG 1), promoting industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), and building peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). The city also excels in climate action (SDG 13), holding the fourth position.

Barcelona has been a pioneer in the local implementation of the 169 targets of the SDGs, integrating them into its policy agenda for the 2020s. This approach has enabled the city not only to meet global objectives but also to adapt these challenges to its local reality, becoming a model for other cities.

Other catalan cities in the ranking

Sant Boi de Llobregat, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona have also shown remarkable performance in various goals. Sant Boi de Llobregat leads in reducing inequalities (SDG 10) and ranks fourth in SDG 17. Girona is the second-best city in gender equality (SDG 5). Lleida is fourth in decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), while Tarragona is fifth in conserving marine life (SDG 14).

Barcelona’s progress in the SDGs demonstrates a strong commitment to the 2030 Agenda and sets an inspiring example of how cities can lead the way towards a sustainable and inclusive future. TBS Education Barcelona celebrates these achievements and is proud to be part of a city that prioritizes sustainability and global cooperation.
