A new ranking, City More 2024, places Barcelona at the top as the best city in Spain for sustainable mobility. This project was created by Meep, an application that integrates and connects various transportation services to create sustainable and interconnected mobility ecosystems.

The criteria for their analysis include in termns of public transportation; the percentage of electric vehicles, the number of charging points, the extent of bicycle lanes, the digitalization of services, real-time timetable information, the percentage of people using it , and the accessibility and security of the entire network.

Sustainability means something to Barcelona

As mentioned in the title, Barcelona ranked first in this classification, all thanks to its motorization rate of 382 automobiles per 1000 residents, a 23% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the implementation of 100% electric buses and the expansion of bicycle lanes contributed to this achievement. For Barcelona, sustainability is a key priority, due to it, is no surprise that this year, the city also reached second place in the Sustainable Development Ranking and is considered the 8th best city to live in the world.

L’Hospitalet del Llobregat and Bilbao are next in the ranking

With a small difference in points, Barcelona is followed closely by its sister city, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and the Basque capital, Bilbao. Both cities have made significant progress in reducing CO2 emissions and improving urban areas. L’Hospitalet has achieved a 19% reduction in cars without environmental tags, while Bilbao ranks at the top for creating walkable streets, with 4 km of pedestrian-friendly roads for every 100000 residents. Without a doubt, these innovations will continue to evolve into something better each year.
